The Hawks/Bears controversy over 5-rated player
There's apparently controversy brewing in the league over a 5-rated player who wants to play in the league, particularly for the Hawks.
Some of you may recall the guy--he referred in some games over the past 2-3 years. His name is Tony --he was the young, thin ref who, imo, was the best ref out there at the time.
Here's a summary of what I've been told (and Bears/Hawks reps can post corrections here as they see fit):
Oh, er, uh, sorry...got off on a tangent there. Anyway, weigh in with your thoughts on this so that Fred or Nate can vote on behalf of the Ice Demons majority position on this matter.
Thanks!

Here's a summary of what I've been told (and Bears/Hawks reps can post corrections here as they see fit):
- Hawks 5-rated player Ben Westerman isn't able to play
- Hawks players, who already play with Tony at the Oaks rink league, talk to him about him coming on board as a Hawk to replace Westerman
- Hawks already have a 5-rated player -- Nate Beil (who, imo, is a high 4...Nate is not the same as Gorman, Barry, Sanford, JP Mitton, etc. And Nate knows I like him so this isn't a personal dig of any kind--I have great respect for the man who was once the little kid I coached back in the 90s--he rocks for the Hawks for sure)
- Hawks were rumored to be trying to get Hanruchuck (sp?) from the Stars in the off season, but I think that fell through
- Jon Pogera left the Hawks of his own accord, going to the Stars without any apparent return pick/player from the Stars (this will probably need to be corrected by the other team reps). I don't think this has anything to do with the Tony Bears/Hawks issue, but nonetheless, I listed it just in case
- Bears do not have a 5-rated player
- MDL historically tries to evenly distribute 5-rated players coming into the league to team's that do NOT aleady have 5-rated players...exception would be Matt Fangman issue of 2 seasons ago when Fangman apparently said he'd only play for the Phantoms and refused to play for the Ice Demons...Ice Demons waived rights to Fangman in exchange for Phantoms draft pick...this occurred all prior to that season's draft
Oh, er, uh, sorry...got off on a tangent there. Anyway, weigh in with your thoughts on this so that Fred or Nate can vote on behalf of the Ice Demons majority position on this matter.
Thanks!

One thing that should noted that I left out of the bullet list initially: the Hawks make a good point that they actively recruited a replacement for Westerman and that the guy they found and lined up should not, in their opinion, be given to the Bears, who may or may not have done any legwork to get a 5-rated player. So from the Hawks perspective, iirc, if Tony goes to the Bears, then the Bears have benefitted from the Hawks work in recruitment.
Communism vs. Capitalism, baby!!!
i played against tony at oaks.
he is at least a 5.
he is a fangman at least.
hard shot,fast skater,great passer.
just telling you what i see.

I guess my opinion is based on the fact that it is a five rated player that is in question. A five rated player to the bears could be the difference in a successful/unsuccessful season. I think that as long as there are teams that have no fives, there should be steps taken to level the playing field. Maybe the bears players don't know of any 5 rated players to recruit, because if they did, I'm sure they would have tried to get them on their team. So for the good of the league....thank you to the hawks for helping out the bears to stay competitive.
I spoke to Jack and Zimmy via phone last week...they felt about the exact same as you, Nate. So far, the Ice Demons majority shares that opinion, so when the vote comes, we'll have to vote in that direction.
BABS,DEAL WITH IT ! BETTER PLAYERS SHOULD MAKE YOU MOTIVAITED TO PLAY HARDER .I MYSELF PLAY WITH TOUGHER COMPATITION EVERY WEEK OTHER THAN MDL! BABS JUST PLAY HOCKEY.
Hey Sasha,
(Who the hell are you?)
I get up to play against the best of the MDL every week. I enjoy shutting down key people on the opposing teams. I live for that, especially because I'm not a scoring force!
You're not looking at the figures in question: the Bears (who desperately need a savior to lead them out of the rink in Egypt to a much better promised land of something better than 1 win per season). The Hawks just knocked off the Crunch...arguably one of the best in the league. You're telling me they deserve this 5-rated player just because everyone else should just "buck up" and play harder? You obviously don't know the MDL. Get a clue!
It's just the MDL man, but we want it to continue its traditions and not just become another (sucky, disparity-ridden) rink league.
Nate or Fred -- can either of you share what was discussed at last night's team rep meeting (assuming one of you attended)?
